Apr 24th 2011 Driving Phobia? Not a Problem, You Can Overcome It
The fear of driving happens to be one of the most common phobias out there and also one of the most debilitating because of the current reliance on cars to move from place to place. People who suffer from the fear of driving are often at a great inconvenience but it is not surprising that most of them will not admit that they have this problem, let alone seek help to overcome it. Instead, they fall for the advertised anti-depressants and anti-anxiety pills which they cannot use for long because they only hide the symptoms of anxiety for a while and not really treat the problem. If you are a sufferer and are in search for effective tips on how to overcome driving anxiety, I have some tips you may find beneficial in this post.
a) Take small steps in overcoming this fear. Most people seek instant remedies that promise the next driving to be fear-free and this is where they get it wrong. The fear of driving is a mental state that takes time to change but it takes numerous small steps.
b) Identify the triggers of the condition, this is where your treatment should focus on. If you suffer this disorder because you have been in an accident or witnessed a crash as a child, you need to block these thoughts, memories or imaginations while driving so as not to trigger the fear.
c) Listening to soothing cool music while driving will help keep you in control of your thoughts and imaginations. Other effective strategies include getting a driving buddy to talk to, meditation and visualization techniques.
d) Avoid taking stimulants such as coffee, alcohol, smoking cigarettes and caffeinated or carbonated drinks because they increase the blood pressure thus increasing the chances of panic attacks. Live healthy and minimize stress by exercising, meditating, getting sufficient rest and boosting self-confidence.
