You may not know this, but there is more than one type of psoriasis. Most people experience plaque psoriasis. However, you may experience a more complicated form like psoriatic arthritic, guttate, or pustular. Here’s an overview of a few of the different types.
Pustular Psoriasis – This form of psoriasis is very painful. Hard pustules form, which are basically blisters containing pus. The skin around these blisters is very fragile, red, and irritated.
Flexural Psoriasis – This type of psoriasis forms in the folds of the skin. It looks like soft, swollen patches of skin, and is prone to irritation from chafing and fungal infections.
Guttate Psoriasis – This type of psoriasis consists of small, red, tear drop shaped raised sores all over the trunk. It can spread to other areas of the body as well. These sores are usually covered with flaky skin. This type of psoriasis is more common in younger people.
Plaque Psoriasis – 80% of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis. Plaques are raised areas of reddish skin covered by a white layer called a plaque. These can occur anywhere on the body. Scalp psoriasis is very common. In fact, many people ask themselves if they have scalp psoriasis or dandruff!
Nail Psoriasis - As psoriasis gets more advanced, it can affect the nails. The nails can thicken and even lift off the nail bed. At first, it starts out with mild pitting in the nail, then proceeds to cracked nails, lifted nails, and split nails. This can be very painful.
Erythrodermic psoriasis – This is irritated plaque psoriasis. The skin swells all over the body, and it can be very itchy, painful, and irritated. If not brought under control, this type of psoriasis can be lethal as it prevents the skin from functioning correctly.
Psoriatic Arthritis – This is where psoriasis causes the connective tissues in the joints to swell, making using hands and feet very painful.
